Resting on the northern tip of Borneo Island, Sabah stands out as one of Malaysia’s most captivating destinations. Its appeal is timeless and ever growing, shaped by nature’s grandeur and cultural depth, offering a sense of discovery that few places in the world can match.
Boasting vast stretches of shoreline that remain largely unspoiled by mass development, this Land Below the Wind is a tropical paradise known for dazzlingly clear waters, teeming marine life, and unadulterated natural beauty. Particularly, in Semporna, this untapped coastal charm is on full display.
Home to hundreds of islands scattered along its coastline, Sabah is exceptionally rich in marine wonders, and blessed with a biodiverse underwater ecosystem. Travellers from across the globe flock to Sabah — especially Semporna — to explore the underwater marvels of islands like Sipadan, Mabul, and Kapalai. On a single dive, you might even glide alongside dolphins, turtles, reef sharks, and manta rays.
As one of Malaysia’s largest states with a relatively small population, one of Sabah’s great appeals is its low density, which renders it a refreshing sense of space and calm. For travellers, this means you can explore jungles, mountains, and seashores without the clamour of crowds, often finding yourself in nature’s quiet embrace.
Sabah’s cultural richness is equally compelling and adds immense depth to any visit. The state boasts a vibrant tapestry comprising over 30 indigenous ethnic groups — each with its own tradition and culture. This diversity yields a rich calendar of festivals, distinctive handicrafts, music, dance, and cuisine. Visitors can experience the joyful Kaamatan Harvest Festival of the Kadazandusun, witness traditional bamboo gong performances, or taste local delicacies influenced by a variety of native flavours.
Sabah’s extraordinary appeal has fuelled a strong tourism rebound post-pandemic, and the state—with Semporna as its star — now stands as a rising tourism hotspot. A total of 3.09 million tourists visited Sabah by October 2025, an increase of 17.4% compared with the same period in 2024, according to State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin in a December 2025 report in the New Straits Times. Dubbed “Malaysia’s Maldives”, Semporna has seen waves of international visitors seeking to experience its stunning islands and crystal-clear waters at a more affordable price point. This momentum is set to continue with two major connectivity upgrades: the expansion of Tawau Airport, and the completion of the Pan Borneo Highway.
Tawau Airport, the nearest airport to Semporna, serves as the main air gateway for tourists heading to its famous islands. In recent years, the airport has been operating beyond its designated capacity due to Semporna’s growing popularity, causing congestion that sometimes results in missed flights during peak times.
To address this, the Sabah state government has been driving the airport upgrade since 2018. Eventually, in September 2025, a groundbreaking ceremony marked the federal government’s launch for major upgrading works at Tawau Airport, which is scheduled for completion by 2028.
The expansion plan includes constructing separate facilities for international and domestic passengers with dedicated immigration, customs, and quarantine halls. In addition, it aims to integrate aerobridges, a larger aircraft parking apron, and upgraded amenities like air-conditioning and check-in counters.
These improvements are expected to raise the annual capacity of the airport from 1.5 million to 2.5 million passengers. With a larger, modernised terminal that fulfils international standards, Tawau can establish itself as a true international gateway, paving the way for more direct flights from key tourist markets, leading to shorter travel times, less congestion, and higher visitor capacity, thereby underpinning future tourism growth in the area.
Currently, driving from Kota Kinabalu to Semporna by land involves long drives on older roads, so travellers often opt to fly instead. The Pan Borneo Highway was introduced to create a continuous high-quality road network across the island of Borneo, linking the key destinations in Sabah, Sarawak, and Brunei, and will serve as a vital link to the Semporna town.
In 2022, the first completed sections of Sabah’s Pan Borneo Highway were open to the public. While the Sarawak’s part is slated for full completion in 2026, Phase 1 of the interstate on the Sabah side is expected to be fully completed by 2029.
With the Pan Borneo Highway, straighter four-lane roads will cut travel times significantly, making overland trips far more comfortable. The toll-free feature will further encourage travel, allowing Sabahans and Sarawakians to embark on road trips to Semporna with ease. With ease of overland travel, Bruneians and even other international tourists who tour across any part of Borneo may find it irresistible to include Semporna as a must-visit stop.
