SEGAMAT (July 6): The federal government remains committed to safeguarding the welfare of civil servants through the provision of affordable housing to ease their cost of living burden, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.(pictured)

The prime minister said the proactive move is also aimed at offsetting rising property prices, while ensuring that every individual serving the nation has access to home ownership.

Anwar, who is also Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman, said to realise this aspiration, the government plans to optimise the use of idle or unused land owned by government agencies to be developed into affordable housing projects.

“Customs land, Immigration land, and excess school land, if available, we will build low-cost housing, at least for civil servants,” he said when speaking at the PMX Meet-and-Greet Programme in Kg Jawa here on Sunday.

Also present were PKR vice-president and joint election director Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Deputy National Unity Minister R Yuneswaran, Johor PKR chairman Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, as well as two PH candidates in the 16th Johor State Election —Jalex Lee En Xiang (Pemanis) and Mohd Afif Abd Hamid (Kemelah).

Anwar said the initiative is not merely at the planning stage, as implementation has already begun in several states, including Johor.

So far, he said 1,700 units of low-cost housing have been approved and are already under construction in Johor to ensure civil servants in the state are not burdened by house ownership issues.

The Meet-and-Greet Programme with PMX is part of Anwar’s campaign tour in conjunction with the Johor state election.

In this election, PH is fielding candidates in all 56 seats, comprising 20 from PKR, 19 from Amanah and 17 from DAP.

A total of 172 candidates are contesting in the election, with polling day set for July 11, while early voting is on July 7.
