1926 Heritage Hotel Penang completes RM20 mil restoration, joins Ascott's Unlimited Collection

PETALING JAYA (July 24): The century-old 1926 Heritage Hotel Penang has completed a RM20 million restoration, reopening as the first property in Malaysia to join The Unlimited Collection by The Ascott Limited, as adaptive reuse continues to expand Penang's heritage hospitality offering.

Located at 227, Jalan Burma in George Town, the hotel comprises 78 rooms and suites across 24 interconnected heritage link houses originally built in 1926 as residences for British officials. The conservation-led restoration retained the property's Anglo-Malay architectural character while repositioning it as an urban resort. The hotel began operations on April 10, 2026, according to its press statement.

The restoration preserved the original façades, timber detailing, spatial layout and garden setting while introducing contemporary interiors guided by the themes of "East meets West" and "Old meets New". The property has been positioned as a heritage boutique hotel offering a culturally immersive stay experience rooted in Penang's architectural and community heritage.

The hotel was officially launched on July 23 by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. The ceremony was attended by Penang Mayor Datuk Rajendran P. Anthony, hotel owner Datuk Frank Koay, Ascott Malaysia country general manager Mondi Mecja, and invited guests from the tourism, hospitality, business, creative and lifestyle sectors.

Chow said he had attended the project's announcement in September 2024, when plans for the refurbishment and Ascott's appointment as operator were unveiled.

"I was here in September 2024 when we announced that this property would undergo a RM20 million refurbishment and be managed by The Ascott Limited. Today, I am glad to return and see the project completed," he said.

He said the project demonstrated how adaptive reuse could preserve Penang's architectural heritage while supporting tourism development.

"The restoration of 1926 Heritage Hotel Penang shows how meaningful adaptive reuse can preserve architectural character and enhance the long-term vibrancy of our tourism economy. Projects like these add depth and distinction to the island while creating new advantages for businesses and communities."

Chow added that the hotel currently employs 27 staff, including nine Penangites, and said investments should create jobs, support local businesses and strengthen the state's tourism industry.

For Ascott, the hotel represents the first Malaysian property under The Unlimited Collection, a portfolio of independently branded hotels focused on local identity and heritage experiences. Mecja said the opening reflected the group's continued expansion in one of its strategic markets.

"Malaysia remains one of Ascott's strategic growth markets, and Penang continues to stand out with its culture, heritage, creativity and international appeal. As travellers increasingly seek stays that connect them more meaningfully to a destination, The Unlimited Collection brings together hotels that celebrate local character, thoughtful design and authentic experiences," he said.

Mecja also said the property had been awarded a five-star hotel classification by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, reflecting its hospitality standards while preserving its heritage character.

The hotel features Sensorium Wellness spa, Root House by Gēn, The Heritage Collection by Daily Coffee, U-Bar, U-Shop, landscaped courtyard gardens, an outdoor swimming pool, meeting facilities and an art corridor showcasing works by Penang artists. It is located within easy reach of George Town's Unesco World Heritage Site, Pulau Tikus and Gurney Drive.
