KUALA LUMPUR (July 30): Malayan Banking Bhd (KL:MAYBANK), the country's largest bank by assets, on Thursday officially launched its new headquarters located at the world's second-tallest building now called Menara Merdeka Maybank.

Maybank occupies 33 floors of the building, housing about 7,000 employees. The headquarters also includes several subsidiaries, including Maybank Islamic Bhd and Maybank Investment Bank Bhd, where the relocation has already started since April.

"The headquarters is designed to foster greater collaboration, innovation, and operational excellence, enabling Maybank to better serve the evolving needs of its customers and communities across the region," Maybank, which serves more than 17 million customers across 18 markets, said in a statement.

The headquarters, formerly known as Menara Merdeka 118, was officially renamed Menara Merdeka Maybank earlier this week. At the same time, Maybank's former headquarters on Jalan Tun Perak was renamed Menara Tun Perak, although the bank's Kuala Lumpur main branch continues to operate there.

The tower is owned and managed by Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) through its wholly owned subsidiary, PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn Bhd.

The ceremony was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and attended by Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, Maybank chairman Tan Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, Maybank group president and chief executive officer Datuk Khairussaleh Ramli, as well as Tabung Haji chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain.

Speaking at the launch, Anwar said financial institutions must continue to uphold integrity, good governance and professionalism as they navigate an increasingly challenging global financial landscape.

He said the strength of a financial institution should not be measured solely by its financial performance, but also by its ability to maintain public trust through sound governance and ethical leadership.

"Malaysia is not exempt from challenges involving integrity and good governance. These values are easy to talk about, but much harder to practise. Failing to uphold them can undermine the moral, economic and social foundations of a nation," he said.

The launch also drew some of country's most prominent corporate leaders, including Tan Sri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun, founder of Berjaya Corp Bhd (KL:BJCORP); Tan Sri Lee Oi Hian, chairman of Batu Kawan Bhd (KL:BKAWAN) and CEO of Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd (KL:KLK); and Datuk Lee Chun Fai, group chief executive officer and managing director of IJM Corp Bhd (KL:IJM), to name a few.
