KPKT first ministry to receive GreenRE Gold Rating

The GreenRE Gold Rating is a green building certification awarded to buildings in Malaysia that achieve strong scores for energy and water efficiency, stated a media release by KPKT today (Sept 1).  

The ratings progress through Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the certification reflected KPKT’s efforts to improve energy efficiency, optimise resources and incorporate sustainable practices into its own operations.

“This achievement reflects KPKT’s commitment to leading by example. As a ministry responsible for shaping sustainable communities and greener cities, we must first practise what we preach by ensuring that sustainability is embedded within our own facilities and daily operations,” he said during the certificate handover session at the KPKT building in Putrajaya today.

The KPKT building, a 38-storey office development with four basement levels, has a gross floor area of about 117,539.73 sq m.

It also received a Gold Energy Certificate rating for its energy efficiency performance and sustainable building management.

Among the building’s key green features are:

*District cooling system: Connected to a district cooling system, achieving a building energy intensity (BEI) of approximately 89.9 kWh per sq m per year.

*Renewable energy and water efficiency: Equipped with a solar photovoltaic (PV) system contributing approximately 0.26% renewable energy replacement, alongside 100% water-efficient fittings throughout the building.

*Smart ventilation: Carbon monoxide (CO) sensors in the car park regulate mechanical ventilation based on air quality, optimising energy use while maintaining a safe environment.

*Energy management: Implements an energy policy to strengthen energy management, monitor performance and drive continuous improvements in energy efficiency.

*Recycling: Operates a building-wide recycling programme with designated recycling bins to encourage responsible waste management.

*Sustainable mobility: Provides electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, access to nearby public buses and bicycle parking to encourage greener modes of transportation.

*Healthy and sustainable workplace: Conducts annual indoor air quality (IAQ) audits and provides an educational corner to promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices among building users.

Nga said KPKT would continue to improve the building’s environmental performance, with the aim of achieving a GreenRE Platinum Rating in the future.

“Gold is an important milestone, but we are not stopping here. KPKT will continue strengthening our green initiatives and improving the environmental performance of this building,” he said.

Nga added that KPKT planned to establish a dedicated department to monitor green rating tools in Malaysia, with the aim of promoting wider adoption of green building certification.

He said the ministry would also explore incentives to encourage building owners and management to adopt more sustainable practices, including lower financing costs, higher financing margins and lower tax rates.

“We will put forward this initiative as part of our proposal during our Budget initiative meeting with the Finance Ministry (MoF) this Thursday,” he said.

GreenRE is a Malaysian green building certification body that assesses the environmental performance of buildings based on criteria including energy efficiency, water efficiency, environmental protection, indoor environmental quality and sustainable practices.

It was established in 2013 by the Real Estate and Housing Developers Association (REHDA) to promote sustainability in Malaysia’s property sector.
