BPSDC, Sisk begin work on 300-home Battersea Power Station phase

PETALING JAYA (Sept 10): Battersea Power Station Development Co (BPSDC) and contractor Sisk have begun construction on Prospect Place South, a new phase that will deliver about 300 homes within the Battersea Power Station regeneration project in London.

BPSDC said the companies marked the start of work at a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday (Sept 9). Construction is expected to be completed in 2030.

Prospect Place South, which forms part of the 42-acre masterplan, will comprise Rosewood House and Hayworth House, two buildings designed by Gehry Partners that will complete the pedestrianised Electric Boulevard.

Besides about 300 homes, the phase will include 65,000 sq ft of commercial space for shops, cafes and restaurants, a 15,000 sq ft community hub and an expanded bicycle hub with 600 spaces.

BPSDC said construction is expected to create 400 jobs, with a target for 20% of the workforce to be recruited locally.

The Battersea Power Station site was acquired in 2012 by a Malaysian consortium comprising S P Setia Bhd, Sime Darby Property Bhd and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF). Representatives of the three shareholders and Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) attended the groundbreaking ceremony.

Application due this month

BPSDC also said it expects to submit a Section 73 planning application this month to update the approved plans for the remaining 16 acres of the site.

Studio Egret West was appointed in February to evolve architect Rafael Viñoly's original masterplan for the final phases of the project. The remaining land already has outline planning permission for up to 3.2 million sq ft of residential, commercial, cultural and leisure space.

About half of the regeneration project has been completed. BPSDC said the neighbourhood now includes more than 2,200 homes, about 800,000 sq ft of offices and more than 170 shops, bars, restaurants and leisure venues.
