KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 9): The cost of RM650 million to develop the Taman Tugu project in Kuala Lumpur consists of four components, including a 10-year maintenance estimate, said Khazanah Nasional Bhd managing director Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar, Bernama reported today.

He said the cost includes the building of a learning and innovation centre, as well as access routes and connectors to the park, besides the construction of the park.

"We admit that it's a huge figure. If we look at it, the cost to build the park is only one quarter of the total, while for the trees (felling and replanting of trees), is only 5%.

"But, we have also invested for the connectors' component that we have planned, as well as maintenance costs for 10 years," he told reporters after attending the first Taman Tugu Public Engagement Session today.

About 300 members of the public participated in the session held at Mercu UEM, KL Sentral.

The project, to be developed on 26.7ha of land, will provide more recreational and study areas for the public. It is expected to cost about RM650 million, with 75% or RM500 million to be financed by Khazanah.

Azman said there will also be a component to promote interactive learning about forestry and the environment, through a science gallery, Bernama reported.

"We can proceed by focusing on planting trees, but we feel it is better if we provide access to improve knowledge [on forestry and the environment].

"Khazanah will ensure that the investment in the Taman Tugu project would be beneficial to everyone in the country," he said.

The second session will take place tomorrow from 10am at Mercu UEM, KL Sentral.
