HONG KONG (Oct 21): Call them shoebox or matchbox, super crowded Hong Kong is notorious for hosting very tiny apartments.
And now, it gets even smaller. Developer Emperor International Holdings is planning to launch a project where each unit measures 61.4 sq ft, according to filings with Hong Kong’s Building Department, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported yesterday.
The unit’s current measurement excludes space allocated for a kitchen and bathroom, according to the department’s data.
“It may be the smallest flat in Hong Kong even taking into account the kitchen and bathroom,” Thomas Lam, head of valuation and consultancy at Knight Frank told the Hong Kong daily.

Located on 17-19 Yik Kam Street in Happy Valley on the island, the yet-to-be-named project is a conversion of a 21-storey commercial building into a residential project, SCMP reported.
Small dwellings are increasingly popular in land-starved Hong Kong.
Average home prices here are one of the priciest on the globe and way beyond the man in the street.
This has led to the emergence of very tiny apartments in an effort to maintain affordability.
In July, SCMP reported that Rykadan Capital has developed The Paseo apartments on a site that is smaller than a basketball court.
A standard basketball court measures 94ft by 50ft.
