KUALA LUMPUR (July 3): Putrajaya has still not made a decision about reviewing the Pan Borneo Highway (pictured) project, Works Minister Baru Bian said today.

"We will look at the cost, feasibility and the implementation of the project.

"Pan Borneo is the very first highway in East Malaysia and we are happy to have highways in Sabah and Sarawak," Baru said at his first media conference as minister, reported The Star today.

As for the progress of the mega project, Baru revealed that for “Phase 1, 11 packages have been awarded. At the moment, most of the construction is on-going."

Phase 1 connects Telok Melano in southern Sarawak to Miri in the north – it is slated for completion in 2021.

Phase 2 involving 77km to link up Sarawak to Sabah is in the planning stage.

In May, Sarawak Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chien Jen was reported to have said that the 706km-long Pan Borneo Highway project will be continued, with an audit reviewing its cost of construction to be conducted.

“The project will continue, as well as other projects in Sarawak, the audit process is part of the procedure that will be carried out.

“Besides that, we will re-examine the contractors who have been appointed in order to avoid delays in completing projects. We want to ensure that the Sarawak people will continue to get the benefit even though the government has changed,” said Chong.
