KUALA LUMPUR: Despite initial concerns from the Brickfields community over the Traffic Dispersal System (under the Federal Government's stimulus package) for the area and KL Sentral, dialogues held between the community and Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd (MRCB) and City Hall (DBKL) have been constructive, Datuk Raja Nong Chik Datuk Raja Zainal Abidin, Minister of Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing told the media at the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of Package 2 in the Traffic Dispersal System.

Costing RM26 million, Package 1 is about 29% completed as of Dec 31, 2009, while package 2, which costs RM28 million, will start construction in the middle of February and will be completed by early 2011.

The first part of Package 2 consists of a ramp from Kuala Lumpur Sentral to Lebuhraya Mahameru and Jalan Damansara. This will divert traffic away from Brickfields by dispersing traffic from KL Sentral into Lebuhraya Mahameru and Jalan Damansara. There will be a few thousand less vehicles going into Brickfields daily after the ramp is completed. Discussions for Package 3 are still on going.

Meanwhile, four dialogue sessions have been held between DBKL and the residents of Brickfields to ensure the development will benefit all concerned.

DBKL has agreed to comply with a number of the residents’ requests including building an overhead pedestrian bridge at Sri Bukit Persekutuan to link the National Museum with KL Sentral, maintaining the development plan for Bukit Travers as an institutional development and widening the fast lane going in and out of Sri Bukit Persekutuan.

The other proposed traffic solutions under the stimulus package are: construction of a flyover at the Jalan Travers/Jalan Bangsar intersection; construction of a flyover from KL Sentral to Jalan Damansara and Lebuhraya Mahameru; upgrading of Jalan Tun Sambanthan and its vicinity; construction of pedestrian bridges and linkage; Upgrade and repair roads in KL Sentral; and construction of an elevated road from Jalan Bangsar to Jalan Maarof.
