MELAKA: Melaka already has a policy to allow land owners to renew their 99-year leasehold tenure much earlier without having to wait until the lease is expiring, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said.

He said the policy, introduced seven years ago, enabled owners to extend their leasehold tenure although the remaining lease was still long.

"Before the policy was introduced, owners had to wait until the last one or two years of the existing leasehold before they can apply to extend the period for another 99 years," he told Bernama when met at his office in Kompleks Seri Negeri here on Friday, Dec 3.

Mohd Ali was asked to comment on Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's announcement last Wednesday that state governments could now renew the lease ahead of their expiry.

Muhyiddin said the move would benefit the public who were concerned about losing their land.

The lease, however, can only be renewed if the government does not need the land for public purposes.

Mohd Ali said Muhyiddin's announcement was for the purpose of coordination among the states.

He said the move also allowed owners make to future plans on building renovations especially those which required bank loans.

"For the past seven years in Melaka, owners of homes, shops and hotels are given the opportunity to apply in advance to renew their leasehold for 99 years even if there are still 30 years remaining in the existing tenure," he said.

He added, however, that the approval would be at the discretion of the state government. — Bernama
