KUALA LUMPUR: The integrated Safe City Monitoring Programme introduced by Housing and Local Government Ministry has helped reduce street crimes by 25 percent and overall crime rate by 5 percent.
Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung said the system, introduced since January, integrates the local government, police and local council.
Through the system, the police who receive reports can act immediately via the Police Reporting System (PRS) and locate the actual location of the crime with help from the local council.
The system also helped the police and the local council to identify crime hot spots. "Currently the system is being used in 42 police stations and 12 local councils throughout the country since January," he told reporters after launching the Safe City Monitoring Programme here on Tuesday April 5.
Chor said the government's target was to ensure 90 percent of cities in the country are safe and crime free by 2013. He said CCTV has been installed at hotspots to prevent crime at such spots.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein and Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar were also at the launch.- Bernama
