Residential Tenancy Act needed to protect tenants’ right and avoid discrimination


KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 28): The Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) will study the need to enact a Residential Tenancy Act to avoid discrimination against any races or gender, said its minister Zuraida Kamaruddin.

“We are now studying the need of enacting the Residential Tenancy Act to protect tenants’s rights. In the future, property owners are not allowed to have discriminative wordings in their rental listings, such as against certain races or genders,” she said during the press conference after unveiling the National Housing Policy (Dasar Perumahan Negara/ DRN) 2018 – 2025 today.

Meanwhile, she added that KPKT is also working on a centralised database to keep track of market supply and demand information that could effectively help in solving the demand-supply mismatch problem.

“We will be using big data analysis in creating this database to monitor the demand and supply condition in every state and area. The information will be used for future housing planning, to avoid over or under supply of houses in certain areas,” she explained.
