KUALA LUMPUR: Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd has received a letter of intent from the Sarawak government to submit a detailed proposal to build, own and operate a new seaport within the Samalaju enclave.

In a statement to Bursa Malaysia yesterday, Bintulu Port said, should the proposal be accepted by policymakers, the company or its wholly owned subsidiary would be appointed to undertake the job.

The terms and conditions, including the duration for the appointment, will have to be agreed between the state government and Bintulu Port.

The Sarawak government has decided to set up a state port at Samalaju to serve industries located within the Sarawak Corridor for Renewal Energy (SCORE), one of Malaysia’s five economic growth corridors.

It was recently reported that the proposed Samalaju Port would cater for energy-intensive sectors such as steel and glass production besides aluminium smelting operations within the planned Samalaju Industrial Park.
