Death toll rises to 15 in landslide in China-Myanmar border region

KUNMING: The death toll in Monday's (May 3) landslide in Myanmar near its border with southwest China's Yunnan Province rose to 15 on Wednesday, May 5, after rescuers recovered another two remaining bodies.

The dead were all Chinese nationals. They worked at a mine in Myitkyina, Myanmar, about 3 km from the China-Myanmar border, said Bi Lei, a spokeswoman with the city government in Baoshan, Yunnan, Xinhua said.

She said five Chinese workers injured in the landslide were taken to Tengchong People's Hospital in Baoshan City Tuesday. They are in a stable condition.

Myanmar asked for China's help in rescuing the workers after the accident happened at 4.50pm Monday, she added.

More than 140 Chinese rescue personnel with rescue machinery took part in the rescue operations, she said. -- Bernama
