KUALA LUMPUR: The GTower (pictured) in Kuala Lumpur city centre has been awarded the Green Mark Gold by Singapore’s Building & Construction Authority (BCA), making it the first BCA fully certified green building in Malaysia.

The BCA Green Mark scheme is a Singapore initiative started in 2005 to promote sustainability in the built environment and raise environmental awareness amongst developers.

The Green Mark Gold Award is valid for three years with renewal dependent on GTower to continuously maintain its green ecosystems.

“GTower’s new working concept is a pioneer in the construction industry, changing the way buildings are being constructed in Malaysia and utilising the latest technologies and innovations to build a Green and Smart building,” said GTower executive director Colin Ng in a press statement on April 22..

By adopting the latest green building technologies to achieve a sustainable, low-energy and healthy environment, GTower is able to cut energy reduction by 25%, compared to buildings of similar size and location, Ng said.

“GTower worked very closely with G-Energy, our energy and green design consultants to realise the vision of an internationally-rated green/low energy modern building for the 21st Century,” added Ng.

The Green Mark Gold award focuses on five key pillars of building green buildings - energy efficiency, water efficiency, environmental protection, indoor environmental quality and other green features and innovation.

GTower’s unique green features save 7.3 million kWh of electricity per year, assuming it operates 10 hours a day at 5.5 days a week for 52 weeks per year.  This is equivalent to a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions into the environment of nearly 3.5 million kilograms which is the same as saving 18,000 trees per year.

The 30-storey GTower on  a two-acre tract is managed by GTower Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of private equity investment company Goldis Bhd. Situated at the crossroads of Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Ampang, Besides office space, the tower also houses a  members-only private Club and a boutique hotel, The G City Club Hotel.
