The new Gurney Wharf seafront unveiled by the Penang government has the potential to cause a devastating environmental impact elsewhere, according to the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) and Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM).

Residents of Taman Desa Cemerlang in Ulu Tiram, near Johor Bahru, are worried that an eroded patch of road is endangering pedestrians and motorists.

The upcoming Gurney Wharf project along Persiaran Gurney, which involves land reclamation, will have mitigation measures in place to arrest the impact of a potential tsunami.

Penang Island City Council today reiterated that it had no records to show that a building demolished on the Runnymede property in George Town was the home of Singapore founder Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles.

"We are in a rather funny situation. Our roads are located on the jurisdictional borders between City Hall and MPKj, and this causes some things to be overlooked, such as the potholes here," says resident Chong Kok Choy.

Spanning close to 60 acres, Gurney Wharf will be created on land to be reclaimed by Tanjung Pinang Development Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of property developer Eastern & Oriental Bhd.

“These Chinese villages should embark on homestay businesses as tourists from China have expressed their keenness to experience the local Chinese lifestyle and culture,” said Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz.

Seven of eight buildings on the site were reportedly demolished – including the former home of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore – on the second day of Chinese New Year two weeks ago. Only the three-storey Runnymede Hotel building remains.

Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Elizabeth Wong said the meeting would include the Malaysian Highways Authority (LLM), Projek Lintasan Kota Holdings Sdn Bhd (Prolintas), and affected residents and associations.
