Potholes

JOHOR BAHRU (Feb 25): Residents of Taman Desa Cemerlang in Ulu Tiram, near Johor Bahru, are worried that an eroded patch of road is endangering pedestrians and motorists.

The situation is worsened by a caved-in drain, which is about three metres deep, next to the pothole in Jalan Johar 6.

A resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, said the erosion became noticeable about four months ago.

“Several neighbours and I surveyed the area, after which we concluded that sedimentation had caused the retaining wall to collapse on the drain and eroded the patch of road at the side.

"We lodged a report with the local authorities, who visited the area a couple of days later. However, they only cordoned off the affected area. No action was taken to restore it”, he said

Another resident, who wished to be known as Joe, said a car had ended up in the ravine after hitting the potholed section of the road.

“It was evening and drizzling and the driver took an unexpected tumble.

"We immediately summoned a crane to tow the vehicle back up onto the road. Fortunately, the driver, who was a young man, was alone and suffered only light injuries," he said.

PKR Tebrau chairman Steven Choong Shaiu Yoon said the local authorities must repair the pothole and drain without delay as they were on a busy road, especially during rush hour.

“It is a two-way street and careless motorists are likely to fall into the trap to avoid oncoming vehicles from the opposite direction," he said, adding that he had made a formal complaint to the Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB), which took the area under its jurisdiction in January.

Prior to that, the neighbourhood was under the jurisdiction of the Johor Bahru Central Municipal Council.

Meanwhile, an MBJB spokesman said the matter would be brought to the attention of the council’s Engineering Division for further action. – The Malaysian Insider
