KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 29): Daily new Covid-19 cases in Malaysia went up again today to 1,925 from 1,594 yesterday. Selangor and Kuala Lumpur reported 1,107 cases or 57% of today's new confirmed cases.

The stubbornly new confirmed positive cases lifted the number of active cases, which carry high transmission risks, to a new record high of 21,443, according to the Ministry of Health.

This is the third straight day active cases remain above 20,000 mark. It is worth noting that the tally of active cases breached 20,000 mark for the first time on Sunday (Dec 26), with 20,035.

Two deaths were recorded today, raising the total fatalities so far to 457, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement.

Selangor remained as the top coronavirus hot spot for the third consecutive day, with 747 cases detected today. The state's total number of infections has doubled this month to 30,716 from 14,826 reported on Dec 1.

Meanwhile, the capital city Kuala Lumpur reported 360 new cases today.

Pahang detected 288 new cases — the third highest today. Dr Noor Hisham said 282 cases in Pahang today were linked to the Tembok Mempaga cluster detected in Bentong.

Furthermore, 307 cases were related to the lock-up, immigration depot centres and prison clusters, including the Tembok Mempaga cluster, the Jalan Harapan prison cluster in Selangor with nine cases, the Tembok Gajah cluster in Johor with nine cases, the Tembok cluster in Kedah with three cases, the Pagar Siput cluster in Johor (three), and the GK Tawau cluster in Sabah (one).
