KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 6): The country’s healthcare system is currently struggling to cope with the number of patients and Health Ministry director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah (pictured) has revealed that it is at a “a breaking point” owing to the surge in Covid-19 cases, reported Malaysiakini today.

"Our health system has been pressured and we are at a breaking point because cases are increasing every day. We may not be able to accommodate patients in our facilities.

"We are looking into how we can enhance our healthcare system. But the best is not only enhancing our healthcare system... but to reduce the load," Dr Noor Hisham was reported as saying by the news portal during a media briefing today.

Dr Noor Hisham also proposed to the authorities about having a more "targeted" variant of the movement control order (MCO) to flatten the curve.

"It is a more targeted approach. Rather than [involve] the whole nation like what we did for MCO on March 18 last year.

"Now I think our strategy will change, we are more localised and targeted in terms of implementation. Discussions are ongoing and probably we will make some decisions as soon as possible," he explained.

He said it cannot be a “one size fits all” approach MCO as seen last year and a “new strategy involved different rules for different states”

For example, travel restrictions could be imposed on areas with a high number of infections.

Malaysia saw a record high of 2,593 Covid-19 cases today with, active cases now at 24,347.
