Malaysia reports 3,973 new Covid-19 infections, 22 deaths

KUALA LUMPUR (May 11) : Malaysia reported 3,973 new Covid-19 cases today – slightly higher than yesterday’s 3,807 – bringing the cumulative number of confirmed infections in the country to 448,457.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement that all but five of the new cases were locally transmitted.

Selangor topped the list with 1,328 cases, followed by Sarawak with 512 cases, and Kuala Lumpur with 483 cases.

Dr Noor Hisham said 22 Covid-19 deaths were reported in the 24-hour reporting period as of noon today – six in Selangor, five in Kelantan, three in Johor, two each in Perak and Kuala Lumpur, and one each in Sabah, Sarawak, Kedah and Pahang.

This raised the total number of deaths in the nation to 1,722.

Dr Noor Hisham said 2,848 Covid-19 patients recovered in the 24-hour period, bringing total recoveries to 408,236 or 91% of all cases.

The total number of active cases as of noon was 38,499. These included 453 patients in intensive care, of which 244 required respiratory help.

The health ministry has identified 13 new infection clusters, including four linked to religious centres, namely Jalan Haji Abdul Aziz in Selangor, Pauh Lima (Kelantan), Jalan Dato Setia (Johor) and Dah Penghulu (Kedah); three each from the workplace and education centres; two from communities and one high risk cluster.

The three workplace clusters are Jalan Utarid Lima (Selangor), Jalan Sepuluh Industri Miel (Selangor), and Jalan Serkam (Melaka and Johor).

The three clusters linked to education centres are Kota Warisan (Selangor), Jalan Lingkaran Ilmu (Johor) and Jalan Mempelam (Selangor).

The two communities clusters are Bako Hilir (Sarawak) and Banggol Gajah Mati (Kelantan), while the sole high risk cluster was detected at Dah Amanjaya 2 in Kedah.

To date, the ministry has identified 1,820 Covid-19 clusters, of which 1,366 have been declared ended. That leaves 454 active clusters.
