MBKT plans several projects for comfort of waterfront heritage city folk

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Kuala Terengganu City Council (MBKT) is planning a number of big projects under the Tenth Malaysia Plan (10MP) for the comfort of residents here.

Mayor Datuk Adzlan Mohd Dagang said among the projects would be the construction of KT Central, which is a fully-equipped, new bus terminal in Bukit Besar, a proper drainage system in the Kuala Nerus area and upgrading of roads.

"We have allocated about RM80 million to create a ring road in this city, near the bus terminal, to avoid traffic congestion.

"The drainage system in the Kuala Nerus area is for preventing flooding which has frequently happened," he said at an MBKT function with the media, here, Tuesday night, June 21.

Adzlan said MBKT, through the state government, had requested for an allocation of RM150 million for its projects under the 10MP.

He said that before this, MBKT had spent about RM14 million on several city beautification projects like the Waterfront, Taman Panorama Bukit Pak Apil and a square behind Kampung Cina.

He added that MBKT would also further beautify the area along the banks of Sungai Terengganu to boost the tourist boat service at the river.

Other projects planned are renovating the Payang Main Market and the building of a 30-storey tower as the MBKT headquarters, which will be the tallest building in this Waterfront Heritage City.

He said the plans for the market renovation and MBKT Tower had been forwarded to the state government for approval.

Adzlan also said that MBKT would increase its annual revenue from RM50 million to RM80 million through various means so as not to depend so much on the state government for funds. — Bernama
