SEREMBAN (July 31): The Negeri Sembilan government has agreed to establish a regulatory board by early next year to resolve problems related to strata titles.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the strata regulatory board would be set up under the purview of the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry.

“We realise there is an immediate need for a regulatory board to hear and resolve problems of strata titles,” he said yesterday.

He said there were many people who were facing problems with their state titles, especially buyers of low-cost housing units.

“There are even cases of buyers who were cheated as they were not informed of the status of the property (beforehand).”

Mohamad said the state wanted the issues of strata titles to be efficiently managed and resolved.

“We need a board with people who have the knowledge to handle this,” he said, adding that the board chairman would have a legal background.

Funding, he said, was one reason the state had decided that the board to be under the authority of the federal government.

However, the power to issue strata title would still lie with the state, he said.

“The board will only manage and resolve issues.

“This is the first time such a decision is made, following an agreement with the federal government,” he said.
