PUTRAJAYA: Eleven multi-purpose venues to be built in Presint 18 are expected to boost sports activities for youths in the area and encourage more international events to be organised.

Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the venues to be built at a cost of RM3.45 million would be equipped with cafeteria, changing rooms, surau and roofed stage.

"With the availability of such facilities in Putrajaya, I believe it will be an added value and benefit the people," he told reporters after a ground-breaking ceremony at the site here on April 14.

He said the initial construction of 11 multi-purpose courts would be ready by May 1, and used during the National Youth Day celebrations in Putrajaya from May 14 to 16.

"Work on facilities like the cafeteria, surau, changing rooms and roofed stage will start in June and expected to be completed by December," he said.

Ahmad Shabery said apart from futsal, the multi-purpose courts could be used for basketball, netball and dodge ball as well as teambuilding activities.

He added that the ministry would ensure every court build meets the specifications, failing which the contractor responsible would not be paid. -- Bernama
