Shah AlamBefore you rent a property, you need to do a lot of research – into the amenities, location, the surrounding neighbourhood and the rents in the area, of course.

But research just cannot beat experiencing a place for yourself. So sometimes, you might get more than you bargained for. One reader of TheEdgeProperty.com can attest to the fact that it is not always a good thing. No stranger to the rental market, he shares his worst experience as a tenant with us.

HH (pseudonym), 28 years old, executive

I used to stay in Section 16, Shah Alam back when I was a student. I have had several bad experiences renting there.

Firstly, we had a rat infestation. We started seeing rat droppings in the kitchen, so we laid out mouse traps, cages and rat stickers to catch them. In the course of two years, we caught more than five rats.

We had extra “guests” living in the house with us as well. From what my housemates and I could tell, there were six or seven “guests” living with us. To be exact, there was a “family” of four upstairs, one “guest” under the stairs and another one outside the clothes drying area. They made noises, played with the computers and switched the lights on and off. However, we eventually got used to it.
