Kelantan is a state that forms the North eastern border of Peninsular Malaysia. It is divided into ten districts, of which, Kota Bharu is the administrative and royal capital. Ethnically, Kelantan has a vast majority of Malays (95%) with minority ethnic groups such as Siamese (Thai), Chinese and Orang Asli. Islam is the state religion. Unlike other Malaysians, Kelantanese have a stronger sense of community among themselves despite their differences in ethnicity and religion. It stands out as one of the states which follows a more rural lifestyle with social strictures such as limiting the presence of entertainment centres imposed to follow a more orthodox Islam.

In 1411, Kelantan gained its independence from Siam (Thailand) and eventually became established as an important centre for trade. The chronological order of Kelantan history includes 1499 – became a vassal state to Malacca Sultanate, 1511 – Portuguese invasion led to downfall of Malacca Sultanate, Kelantan was divided and ruled by chieftains subject to Patani control, 1760 – the divided territories were reunited, 1909 – became an Unfederated Malay State that was part of British Malaya, 1941 – Japanese occupied for four years, 1946 – joined the Malayan Union, 1948 - was part of Federation of Malaya, 1957 – gained independence and 1963 – became  a state of Malaysia.

Kelantanese culture is unique whereby Malay customs preserved and are influenced by Thai traditions. Kelantanese Malay, cuisine and arts are distinct. Prominent traditions still in practice include gasing (top-spinning) contests, bird singing contests, wau bulan (giant intricately decorated moon kites) flying contests, kertok drumming, silat (indigenous martial arts) and handicrafts such as batik, songket (hand woven silk or cotton with interwoven silver or gold threads), silver crafts and woodcarvings.

Kelantanese cuisine makes heavy use of coconut milk to cook rich, creamy curries. Local Malay specialties include Nasi Daging – white rice and brown glutinous rice cooked with coconut milk eaten with sambal (chili paste), Nasi Kerabu – blue rice with sambal and budu, Nasi Tumpang – a cone-shaped banana leaf pack of rice, omelet and meat floss, Ayam Percik – chicken in sweet coconut gravy, Keropok Lekor – fried fish sausages, Laksa Kelantan – noodle soup in a rich gravy of white fish and coconut and Budu – fermented anchovy sauce, while Thai influenced dishes include Somtam – green papaya salad and Kaeng Matsaman – beef in a coconut, peanut sauce.

Tourists must visit Siti Khadijah Market - run majorly by women, Gunung Stone State Park – famous for the seven-tiered Jelawang Waterfall, Kampung Tok'kong – houses a 300-year old Chinese temple, Handicraft Village and Craft Museum, Pantai Bisikan Bayu (Beach of Whispering Breeze), Pantai Cahaya Bulan (Moonlight Beach) and Buddhist temples (Wat Phothivihan and Wat Dua Naga) for their impressive Lord Buddha statues.
