KUALA LUMPUR (June 21): Malaysia’s new daily Covid-19 cases dropped below the 5,000-mark for the second time in seven days. The Ministry of Health reported 4,611 confirmed positive cases as of noon today — the lowest in 35 days.

The last time the country reported over 4,000 cases was last Monday (June 14), with 4,949 cases.

The Klang Valley — comprising Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya — reported 1,671 cases today representing 36% of today’s cases. Selangor’s cases dropped to 1,346 from 1,680 yesterday — the lowest since June 7, when 1,374 cases were reported.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur saw 310 cases, down from 379 the day before, while Putrajaya reported 15 cases today, up from four cases yesterday.

Sarawak came in second with 682 cases, followed by Johor (314) and Kuala Lumpur (310), according to a tweet by Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Cumulative cases breached 700,000.

Yesterday (June 20), Dr Noor Hisham said in a statement that Selangor and Kuala Lumpur reported 1,680 and 379 Covid-19 cases respectively.

He said Johor registered 627 newly infected persons yesterday.

Today, Malaysia's daily number of new Covid-19 cases fell below 5,000 again after last Monday (June 14) when 4,949 infections were reported as the nation undergoes a total lockdown to curb the spread of the pandemic.

On May 28, 2021 the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a statement that the National Security Council (NSC) had decided to implement phase one of the total lockdown across the country from June 1 until last Monday (June 14).

The PMO said that during the total lockdown, all industries were not allowed to operate except "essential economic and service sectors" listed by the NSC.

On June 11, 2021, news reports, quoting Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, said that the total lockdown would be extended from June 15 to June 28.
