PETALING JAYA (Sept 4): The investment arm of the Selangor government, Invest Selangor Bhd, is eyeing 1,000 acres of land in the state to host aircraft manufacturer Airbus’ first aircraft teardown facility in Southeast Asia, according to a report by The Edge Malaysia.

“The aerospace investor is seeking suitable land measuring a total of 1,000 acres, where at least 500 acres must be within Selangor. The investor is Airbus, and it is looking to set up an aircraft teardown facility,” as source told the weekly.

An Airbus spokesperson, however, denied to the weekly that “the company had any plan to set up a parts remanufacturing or reconditioning facility in Malaysia” but sources “within the Selangor government confirm the plan”, wrote The Edge.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari had previously announced that Selangor is “exploring possibilities” to have Airbus invest in an aircraft teardown services facility in the state. He also revealed that the suitable land must be located in proximity to a runway.

This came about after a Selangor delegation visit to Europe’s Tarmac Aerosave SAS, which is jointly owned by Airbus, Safran and Suez. The company specialises in aircraft recycling and teardown activities, aircraft storage and engine maintenance services.

Meanwhile another source told the business publication that the plan may not take off owing to Covid-19 movement restrictions.

“If the government does not reopen the economy and allow easier movement of people, then Airbus may not pursue the plan. It wants to come here to discuss the investment, but is having a tough time with the quarantine requirements and all,” said the source.

So, who are the landowners who could have suitable real estate for such a facility?

UPDATE

Clarification from The Edge on Sept 11, 2021

In our story titled “Invest Selangor seeks 1,000-acre land for aircraft teardown facility” (Issue 1386, Sept 6), it was quoted that the investment arm of the Selangor government is seeking 1,000 acres of land to house European aircraft maker Airbus’ first aircraft teardown facility in Southeast Asia.

Invest Selangor has clarified that the statement quoted is inaccurate and that the virtual meeting held on Aug 19 was a meeting between Invest Selangor and several other related companies on a specific and different agenda, completely unrelated to the alleged Airbus investment. The error is regretted.
