KUALA LUMPUR: The 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP) will place emphasis on the use of renewable energy and on increasing energy efficiency to ensure the sustainability of the environment, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib
Tun Razak said on Thursday June 10.

He said various measures, such as relevant guidelines, standards and laws, would also be introduced to ensure efficient use of energy, and to reduce greenhouse gas emission.

The government would also introduce, among others, the Feed-in Tariff and the Renewable Energy Fund to encourage the implementation of renewable energy projects, he said when tabling the 10th Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat.

Environment-friendly housing would be introduced while Putrajaya and Cyberjaya would serve as flagship green townships, he said.

"The government will take the lead in adopting green building standards. New government buildings will be designed to meet green standards.

"Energy efficiency of existing buildings will be enhanced and, as a showcase example, the Prime Minister's Office complex will be upgraded to meet the Gold Standard Green rating," he said.

Najib said the government would also promote economic opportunities which create value from conservation.
"For example, eco-tourism can generate income, particularly for local communities to encourage the conservation of the country's flora and fauna.

"We must also seize opportunities that arise from emerging trends, where green products, services and technology are increasingly in demand," he said.

Najib called on industries to use the incentives provided by the government through the Green Technology Financing Scheme worth RM1.5 billion to enhance the application of green technology in the production of goods and provision of services.- Bernama
