PENANG (October 3): Sponsored by Penang City Councillors, 550 trees of a variety of species will be planted in the Batu Lancang area, in a beautification project.

The Star reports that the trees were sponsored by four Penang Island City councillors: Gerald Mak Mun Keong, D. Harvinder Singh, Theng Jie Wey and Shung Yin Ni, and cost RM49,000.

Sixty of the trees were planted by Batu Lancang assemblyman Ong Ah Teong in Taman Green Lane in George Town on Sunday.

Ong, a former city councillor, thanked the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).

Quoted by the daily, he said: “I have also asked the council to patch up the field so that I can organise football games.

“I want to let more people enjoy the facilities,” he said.

The remaining trees would be planted in stages, at other locations.

MBPP mayor Yew Tung Seang was quoted as saying that the council had planted 363,665 trees on Penang island over the last 10 years.

For the future, the council was committed to planting 100,000 more trees on the island over the next five years.
