PETALING JAYA (June 29): Malaysia has recorded 336 suicide cases in the first three months this year, an average of four cases a day, reported Free Malaysia Today.

According to data from the police, Malaysia has 631 suicide cases last year, the number of cases recorded in the first three months this year was more than half than total cases in 2020.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said lack of support networks and extreme stress could be the main reasons that causes mental health problems such as depression.

Members of the public should pay more attention to their family members or friends who are showing early symptoms of depression, he urged.

The symptoms include changing of behaviour, constantly feeling hopeless or powerless, and talking about wanting to end their lives either verbally or in writing, said the report.

It is advised that the individual who displays such symptoms should seek for professional medical advice immediately. Meanwhile, as a family member or friend, it is important to show care to the affected individual, to listen to them, to show empathy, and to avoid judgemental behaviour.

Noor Hisham also urged those affected to reach out for support at the following hotlines:

Mental Health Psychosocial Support Service (MHPSS): 03-29359935 or 014-3223392
Talian Kasih: 15999, or WhatsApp 019-2615999
Jakim’s Family, Social and Community care centre: WhatsApp 0111-9598214
Befrienders Kuala Lumpur: 03-76272929
