Anwar Syahrin, 41, has beaten four candidates who have been shortlisted by the special committee set up by the board of UEM Sunrise, after Wan Abdullah passed away in February this year.

He was formerly the group chief financial officer and group head, ports & logistics division at MMC Corp Bhd, a position he assumed in 2008.

“At a time when UEM Sunrise is facing both challenges and opportunities, Anwar Syahrin will provide a unique and different perspective to the company’s operations as well as the energy to propel UEM Sunrise and its employees to future success,” the group said in a press statement yesterday.

UEM Group Bhd MD and CEO Datuk Izzaddin Idris commented that Anwar Syahrin has the qualities that UEM Sunrise was looking for and he is qualified to lead the property group.

“In his prior posts where he was involved in several industries, Anwar Syahrin successfully mobilised people, assets and technology to achieve change and growth,” said Izzaddin, who is also the executive director of UEM Sunrise.

He noted that Anwar Syahrin’s selection came after a comprehensive review and assessment of internal and external candidates led by a special committee set up by the board of UEM Sunrise.

Meanwhile, Izzaddin will be redesignated as a non-independent non-executive director of UEM Sunrise on Sept 1.

He, however, will continue to advise and support the management team of UEM Sunrise on key strategic matters in his capacity as the MD and CEO of UEM Group, which currently holds about 66% stake in UEM Sunrise.
