BEIJING: A month-long trial of the Shanghai-Beijing high-speed railway would start on Wednesday, May 11, a Chinese Railways Ministry spokesman said.
"The high-speed railway will test run on May 11, and it is expected to be fully operational by end of June," said the spokesman, Wang Yongping during an online session with the public on Monday.
The 1,318km long Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway is designed to have a speed of 350 kilometres per hour. The railway will be able to transport 80 million passengers a year.
The operation of the high-speed railway is expected to have a strong impact on local airlines since the traveling time of trains between the country's two major economic zones will be cut to less than five hours from the current 10 hours.
Wang said the authorities would open online ticket service for Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway by the end of June.
However, he said the ticket prices are still under discussion. — Bernama
