Located within Shanghai’s grade 4A National Tourism Park in the Songjiang district, the Sunville project sits at the core of the southern foot of West Sheshan. The 1,389-acre residential area consists of 13 isles and a peninsula that are connected by European-style steel bridges in different colours.

• The project started in 2000, with various international architects roped in to design 268 villas in different styles, such as North American, Mediterranean, Wright’s prairie and Baroque.

• The development was completed last year, Shanghai Best Land deputy CEO Zhou Guo-ping tells City & Country in an email, adding that only 10 villas have been sold so far. The roads leading to the development are paved with stones.

• Each waterfront villa boasts a private jetty. According to the Sunville website, the upper floor of each unit in the development is about 4m to 16m high, while the basement is between 4.5m and 6m. The double-grade piling is 17m to 20m deep.

• The project has been described as low-density, with 75% of the area allocated for landscaping and greenery. A 300-acre lake in the project serves as a natural security barrier. Feng shui elements also feature in the waterand- mountain landscape.

• The website describes Sunville as a quality, stylish and exclusive area where the elite from around the world live.

• Sunville, translated into Mandarin as Zi-Yuan (Purple Residences), symbolises elegance as well as a blissful and wonderful life. The name ‘Zi‘ (purple) is also related to The Forbidden City, which is called as Zi Jin Cheng in Mandarin.

• The 172,222 sq ft man-made lake in the township, a 78m deep former mining pool, is named Purple Pond (Zi Tan).
