DBKL: RM135m compensation if Bukit Gasing project is halted

KUALA LUMPUR (March 5, 2012): Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) would have had to compensate Gasing Meridian Sdn Bhd RM135 million if the Sanctuary Ridge luxury homes development on the hillside of Bukit Gasing was not allowed to be developed, said mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail.

"(Gasing Meridian) has submitted for approvals (the building of public roads in their site) earlier and we have approved," he said at a press conference here on Monday, March 5.

"If we did not grant approvals we would have to pay the developer RM135 million. Is it proper to spend RM135 million to entertain the complaints that largely come from Selangor people who have benefited from developments there and have bought houses there, to have Kuala Lumpur ratepayers pay for this?"

He added that it could create a precedent where city hall will have to take over such developments in future.

"Then allegations that we 'know' the developers will surface, and it will be spun because there are political elements," he said.

Fuad also said the project had to be approved because of a number of reasons.

Firstly, Gasing Meridian already held the land title, which is not part of the green lung. Secondly, the land was approved for residential use and thirdly, the development was low in density at only 71 plots in total.

Fuad added that the residential land status had been granted earlier by Jabatan Perancangan Bandar Desa Selangor before part of Bukit Gasing was annexed to Kuala Lumpur.

On Sunday, more than 150 residents of Bukit Gasing and their supporters held a rally to raise their concerns over the hillslope development on the Kuala Lumpur side of the hill.

The Bukit Gasing Joint Action Committee said residents of the area were worried when trees were cleared and earthworks began on the 15.4ha site last year despite the fact that their case was pending a hearing at the Court of Appeals tomorrow.

Sanctuary Ridge comprises 68 land parcels for sale, including bungalow plans. The gross development value of the project is RM500 million.
