KUALA LUMPUR (April 4): GreenRE (Green Real Estate) has called for more developers to use the “green” building concept to produce environmentally friendly developments during the Malaysia Property Expo Klang Valley 2015 (Mapex-Klang Valley 2015) in Mid Valley today.
GreenRE is a non-profit initiative started by the Real Estate and Housing Developers' Association (Rehda) in 2013 to encourage the local property development industry to adopt sustainable methods, with an emphasis on passive design.
“Some developers are under the perception that the concept is too costly. However, developers need to consider the preservation of the environment, with buildings currently making up 32% of global energy usage. To encourage developers here, they must first be informed of the benefits in green development to conserve energy usage in our buildings," said James Chua, executive director at GreenRE.
“Above all, the green building concept will reduce energy consumption by up to 30%. With this, the cost of living will be reduced as well.”
Chua said GreenRE will be training developers and the public to educate them on the benefits of the green building concept.
“With our partnership with Rehda, we will be having a training session on the green building concept, which will be conducted by experts from Singapore. The government is firmly backing our efforts and we hope to see more Malaysian developments becoming eco friendly.”
Last year, 18 developments applied for GreenRE standards. They include Tropicana International School, Petaling Jaya, and Oasis Business Centre, Negri Sembilan.
GreenRE has adopted Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark scheme as the benchmark for green buildings.
