KUALA LUMPUR: Land owners in Kampung Baru can become millionaires as they stand to receive up to RM4 million each upon accepting the redevelopment concept plan proposed by the government.

Federal Territories and Urban Well-Being Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said such payment was possible because the value of the 80 hectares of land (200 acres) was worth RM20 billion.

"Every land owner can become a millionaire if they accept the plan. It is up to them though," he told reporters after opening the Malaysia Inter-Varsity Debate
Minister of Higher Education Cup here on Sunday Feb 7.

Raja Nong Chik advised land owners and residents in Kampung Baru to accept the government's proposal because it can benefit them.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced that a trust would be set up to implement the Kampung Baru redevelopment plan and gave assurance that the rights of owners, the unique Malay identity and cultural legacy of the area would be retained and residents would not have to move out. They (land owners) would also have the right to decide the form of development in their area.

Raja Nong Chik said he would prepare a working paper on the redevelopment plan and proposal for submission to the Cabinet and once approved, would hold a dialogue with the people of Kampung Baru. "During the dialogue, they can give us their feedback and we will make the necessary changes accordingly," he said.-- Bernama
