KUALA LUMPUR: Homeowners of six houses in the Klang Valley emerged winners at the haven/The Edge My Dream Home Awards 2010. They received their awards at a ceremony at 1 Utama Shopping Centre on Saturday, July 24.

There are four categories namely detached/semi-detached, terraced, condominium and the inaugural My Green Home Award. The contest was open to homeowners in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor and was held from April to May, 2010.The event was organized by The Edge and haven, the interior design and garden magazine published by The Edge in association with Persatuan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) and Institut Perekabentuk Dalaman Malaysia (IPDM).

There were two Gold Award winners in the detached/semi-detached category this year – Francis Lee and Yap Poh Lean for their home in Shah Alam and Mr & Mrs Anthony Leong for their house in Section 7 Petaling Jaya. The Leongs’ house also bagged the My Green Home Award 2010, a new category introduced this year in recognition of efforts by homeowners to go green. The 1960s house was given new life with the help of architect Dr Tan Loke Mun.

"We have always wanted to keep the old charm of the house as old houses are usually built with passion so we wanted to keep that," said Mrs Leong. "But we also wanted a modern villa. So this house has both the old and the new with a sense of openness. So it's really our dream house."

Joint Gold Winner Lee said: "We're happy, the award is a result of the architect's unusual ideas. We also had to source for the timber - ebony, for example - from our travels. My son lives at home the most and he finds it nice and comfy." The unusual curved design of the house is by architect Wooi Lok Kuang.

The Gold Award in the terraced category went to Lim Sue May for a 2-storey terraced home in Subang Jaya which captivated judges with its open spaces and clean lines. "Winning this award would not have happened if it were not for the working coordination between the owner and architect," shared Lim. "It is a good mutual understanding that led to this result." Architect for the home was Chan Mun Inn while the interior designer was Wong Pei San.
