JITRA: The Kubang Pasu District Council (MDKP) is expected to charge 500 owners of houses, business and factory premises in court for failing to pay quit rent.

Its Enforcement Division Head Zakariya Ahmad said more than 3,000 premises with arrears of more than RM1,000 have also been identified.

He said the council would seal such premises that have not paid quit rent for between five to 20 years.

"MDKP has so far issued 7,100 notices to remind the owners to make payment or face action," he told Bernama here on Monday, Oct 17.

Zakariya said the council should be able to collect RM3.59 million in quit rent from 23,299 premises under its jurisdiction.

He also reminded owners of premises to refrain from obstructing MDKP enforcement officers to carry out their duties, especially when they come to seal their premises, since such an obstruction was an offence that can be punished under Section 112 of the Local Government Act 1976. — Bernama
