KUALA LUMPUR: Two more buildings are expected to be awarded with the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) Malaysia Cybercentre status by end-2010, according to Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, CEO of the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC).
“It has always been our plan to increase the number of MSC Malaysia Cybercentres. We are continuously evaluating applications,” Badlisham told the media after officiating MSC Malaysia Cybercentre status to GTower on Thursday, Aug 19.
Currently, there are 19 cybercities and cybercentres in operation throughout Malaysia. The first MSC Malaysia Cybercentre status was awarded to KL Sentral building in 2006.
The rollout of MSC Malaysia Cybercentres will continue to be based on industry demands and readiness of potential sites. However, to be awarded MSC status is not just about compliance, but also about demographics, Badlisham added.
“There is a need to consider whether the investment is viable. If there are not enough returns, then we will not encourage the establishment to do so just for the sake for having MSC status,” said Badlisham.
GTower, located at the intersection of Jalan Ampang and Jalan Tun Razak is the country’s first grade A++ commercial building with one plus (+) marking Building & Construction Authority of Singapore's (BCA) Green Mark Gold and another plus marking MSC Malaysia Cybercentre status. BCA’s Green Mark is an internationally recognised green building certification system.
Badlisham expects more and more new office buildings to adopt the same standard as GTower to attract companies, eventually becoming the norm as time passes.
MSC Malaysia is home to over 2,500 local and multinational MSC Malaysia status companies involved in various ICT cluster, namely, InfoTech, Shared Services and Outsourcing, and Creative Media. There are more than 3,000 ICT companies in Malaysia, many of which are becoming renowned regionally and globally.
