TAWAU: In an effort to beautify the town, the Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) is offering a 30% assessment rebate on old buildings to owners who repaint them.

Its president, Ismail Mayakob said the incentive was in line with the Tawau beautification programme which was launched recently.

"I hope building owners will take up the offer," he told reporters after chairing an MPT meeting here on May 10.

Meanwhile, Ismail said the MPT would revoke the licence of Tanjung Market traders, who rented them to foreigners.

On dilapidated retail outlets at the Tawau Port, he urged traders to repair and brighten them up as they were an eyesore.

He said the premises should be beautified to protect the image of Tawau as the main entrance to the state from Sebatik, Nunukan and Tarakan islands, Indonesia. -- Bernama
