KUANTAN: The Pahang state government will not allow or approve any new development in Fraser's Hill, to preserve its environment and serenity as a premier tourist retreat.

Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said only refurbishing, upgrading work on existing buildings and extension within the confined areas would be allowed.

"There will be no new development in Fraser's Hill, except on existing facilities like hotels. If an old hotel is to be rebuild or extended, it will be allowed," he said after witnessing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Pahang Tourism Action Council and Pahang Tourism Agencies at Bukit Gambang Resort City near here on April 12.

He added that any new development would endanger the ecology system and damage the environment of the resort hill.

"We have seen throughout the world, how excessive development can ruin the environment and serenity of such places, and if we do not control development in

Fraser's Hill, it will suffer a similar fate," he said.

Adnan said the authorities were also monitoring the situation in Cameron Highlands, especially illegal settlements and disposal of waste.

"I am also worried about the situation in Cameron Highlands and that is why pro-active measures like stopping development in Fraser's Hill is needed," he said. -- Bernama
