PENANG: Penang's first ICT mall at Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak (Komtar) is expected to open its door for business on Sept 1.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the renovation on the first ICT mall in the northern region had reached 30%.

"We are very excited on introduction of the ICT Mall, which is located on the lot where Yaohan Departmental Store used to occupy," he told reporters at a briefing by the Venice Gateway Sdn Bhd executive director, Denny Wong, here on Monday, April 12.

He said the 18-year tenancy agreement between Komtar owner Penang Development Corp (PDC) and Venice Gateway Sdn Bhd was signed on March 9.

"The state government has long-awaited the Komtar reviving project and this would boost the occupancy rate of Komtar," he said.

The PDC in 2008 signed on another anchor tenant, Pacific Hyper-market & Department Store Sdn Bhd, which is currently occupying the lot of the former Super Komtar Departmental Store.

Meanwhile, Wong said the response had been good and about 100 tenants had signed up space at the mall, which had a full capacity for 250 tenants.

Among the products to be sold at the mall are electrical and electronic products, computers, handphones, cameras and other related goods.

"We hope that the mall would be able to attract not only locals but also foreigners as Komtar used to be the prime shopping mall in Penang," Wong said. -- Bernama
