MELAKA: The Kampung Baru Development Corporation, which serves as the planning and governing body for development actvities in Kampung Baru in Kuala Lumpur, is expected to be operational next year.

Minister of Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said the bill for the setting up of the corporation was expected to be tabled in parliament at the end of the year.

"The corporation is not a business entity but functions as the governing body for the development of landed properties in the Kampong Baru area," he told reporters after officiating the law-drafting session for the bill at a hotel, here last night.

The four-day session was attended by almost 50 Kampong Baru landowners and beneficiaries, Malay non-governmental organisations and developers to draw up the draft law for the corporation to be forwarded to the attorney-General's Chambers for drafting.

The 110-year-old Kampung Baru, covering an area of 90.2 hectares, has 35,000 residents living in seven village-like sectors.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, on his walk-around visit to Kampung Baru on Feb 6, had indicated that among the re-development aspects to be focused there included construction of high-rise buildings, condominiums, shopping centres, residential area and to offer business opportunities especially to bumiputera traders.

Raja Nong Chik said apart from the Kampung Baru Corporation, a developer for Kampung Baru would also be formed for the purpose of preparing funds and to carry out physical development for Kampung Baru.

He said two government-linked companies, Permodalan Hartanah Berhad and the Tabung Haji Management Board, had already agreed to develop Kampung Baru.

"The Permodalan Nasional Berhad which is also invited has already agreed in principle to take part as well," he said.

He added his ministry would soon appoint a local university to carry out a research study among the residents in Kampung Baru to obtain their exact and transparent feed-back for the development of the area.

Raja Nong Chik said the research was important in view of the various opinions being expressed, and through the study the ideas of the majority of the land owners would be taken into consideration. -- Bernama
