ALOR SETAR: The Rural and Regional Development Ministry has allocated RM7.8 million to Lembaga Kemajuan Wilayah Kedah (KEDA) to build houses under the Program Bantuan Rumah (PBR) in Kedah.

Keda chairman Datuk Paduka Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said through the allocation, 173 affordable houses at RM33,000 each would be build while 228 houses would be upgraded at a cost of RM11,000 each.

"The allocation is however, not enough to cater for the demand as many applicants are waiting for their turn," he told reporters after handing out keys to 19 recipients under the programme in Kampung Alor Binjal near here on Monday, June 20.

According to Ahmad Bashah, KEDA would appeal for additional allocation to ensure those in the lower income group can own houses.

Ahmad Bashah who is also the Kedah Umno Liaison chief said since 2004, Keda had built 4,556 houses and restored 1,956 houses under the programme through a RM96.5 million allocation. — Bernama
