KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Government is seriously considering building a road tunnel, particularly in the hilly area, to connect the city or major towns to towns in the interior, said Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan.
He said the tunnel was in the agenda of the state's road and transportation system, adding that while the initial cost was expensive, the maintenance was cheaper in the long run.
Pairin, who is also state infrastructure development minister, said the construction of a road tunnel would not only reduce maintenance cost but help reduce travel time, as well.
"It may also save and protect the environment," he told reporters after launching the Internatioanl Conference On Geotechnical and Transportation Engineering or Geotropika 2010 here on Wednesday, Dec 1.
On a different note, Pairin, who is Parti Bersatu Sabah president, urged the people of Sabah not to be hoodwinked by Parti Keadilan Rakyat de factor leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's empty promises.
He said Anwar was unreliable and the people should not be taken in by his "false promise", adding that the people should continue to support the ruling Barisan Nasional state government for the good of the people and the state. — Bernama
