Scomi’s Mumbai Monorail transports 40,000 in first two days

KUALA LUMPUR: India’s first monorail, a joint venture between India’s Larsen & Toubro and Malaysia’s Scomi Engineering Bhd (the transport arm of Scomi Group Bhd), opened to the public on Sunday, transporting about 40,000 passengers in the first two days of operation.

“It is a very proud moment for us as we witnessed the successful commissioning of the Mumbai Monorail project. With this significant milestone, we have set new standards in monorail transport systems and established new milestones in urban transport,” said Scomi Engineering’s chief executive officer Kanesan Veluppillai.

He added that Scomi Engineering will place emphasis on the reliability of its rail solutions and on delivering quality customer service. Mumbai Monorail marks Scomi Engineering’s entry into the operations and maintenance of monorail and rail systems.

“We believe this project will pave the way for many more monorail projects in India in order to cater to the country’s fast-growing infrastructural requirements,” Kanesan said, adding that the other Indian cities currently pursuing the monorail system are in the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Phase 1 of the Mumbai Monorail was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra state Prithviraj Chavan and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Saturday.

Scomi Engineering secured the Mumbai Monorail project, valued at RM1.8 billion, in November 2008.

In January 2014, Scomi Engineering delivered the first four-car train set for the Kuala Lumpur monorail fleet expansion project. Under the RM494 million project, Scomi Engineering will supply a total of 12 sets of four-car trains and a new depot, and upgrade the stations as well as signalling, power supply and other rail systems.
