SIBU (Sarawak): The new township of SibuJaya, about 27km from here, is set to be the envy of housing projects in the state, with the completion of its RM9 million boulevard by Nov 15, this year.

The 1.7km long boulevard is incorporated with features to improve the health of its over 30,000 inhabitants. These include cycling tracks and pedesterian walks, customised light-emitting diode street lightings and more than 1,000 tress planted within
its surroundings.

State housing minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg has sung praises of the features, saying they would help the people to develop healthy lifestyle.

Speaking to the media after an inspectional visit today, he said the cycling tracks and pedestrian walks were to encourage the people to either cycle or walk to the commercial centre.

"This will solve traffic congestion and reduce vehicular pollution. The trees will not only beautify the place but also serve as its green lung," he said.

The SibuJaya township, a government and private sector joint-venture project, is the state's biggest affordable housing area with a current 7,000 units, and another 5,000 more units to be constructed in the near future.-Bernama
