PETALING JAYA: haven/The Edge My Dream Home Awards 2009 saw six homes in the Klang Valley winning the awards. The homeowners received their awards at a presentation ceremony held at 1-Utama Shopping Centre on July 25, 2009.

Into its third year, the contest has seen an increase in the number of entries by 27% from last year.
It is organised by bi-monthly garden and interior design magazine haven and business weekly The Edge in association with Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) and Institut Perekabentuk Dalaman Malaysia (IPDM) with the main sponsor Alliance Bank Malaysia.

Open to properties in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, the contest is divided into three categories - detached/semi-detached houses, terraced houses and condominiums.

In the detached/semi-detached category, the Gold Award went to the home owned by Fung Kai Jin located in Sierramas, Sungai Buloh. Designed as a passive energy-saving house, encouraging natural light and minimal air-conditioning, the 4,500 sq ft home uses concrete, bamboo poles and glass throughout.

Due to the competitive entries received, two Silver awards were given in this category. One was the weekend home of architect Almaz Salma Abdul Rahim in Kuang, Selangor. Combining  traditional Malay and modern architecture, the house on a two-acre homestead is predominantly made of recycled timber.

The other Silver award went to David and Anushia Lingam, owners of a SS3 detached home with a built-up of over 20,000 sq ft. Its signature monopitch roof extends over a boundary wall of the house for an elongated roof overhang.

In the terraced category, the Gold award went to homeowner and designer Sheryn Pitman for her dream home, located in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. The two-storey corner house took more than two years to renovate and doubled the built-up from its original 2,000 sq ft.

Meanwhile, a three-storey terraced house in Lake Fields, Sungei Besi in Kuala Lumpur belonging to Loke Seok Eng received an Honorary Mention in this category.

A Zen-inspired duplex penthouse at the Bunga Raya Condominium in Saujana Resort, Shah Alam owned by Anthony Wong was the Gold award winner in the condominium category.

In his speech, The Edge Communications managing director Ho Kay Tat noted an overall marked improvement in the quality of entries received this year, including more sustainable designs.

"Winning entries for this year not only pay homage to sustainability but also boast character and unique charm. It is not just about brilliant architecture or interior design. A dream home must be pleasing to the eyes as well as comfortable to live in," he said.

Ho added the organizers are considering extending the contest beyond Klang Valley. His speech was read out by The Edge property & retailing executive editor Au Foong Yee who is also editor of haven.

Alliance Bank Malaysia Bhd Group CEO and Alliance Financial Group Bhd director Datuk Bridget Lai officiated the awards presentation.

"I would like to encourage have/The Edge to continue making this an annual event, as this collaboration goes beyond the competition," she said, adding that on a personal level, she has learnt a lot from being on the contest's panel of judges for the past three years and hoped to continue "learning" for years to come.

The judges for the awards this year are Lai, Au, PAM president Lee Chor Wah, IPDM president Hussein Hamzah and fashion designer Sonny San. The contest, which ran from April to May, honours homeowners and recognises outstanding architecture and interior design, with an appreciation for a sustainable environment.

Among the prizes are business-class tickets to Phuket (Gold winners only), Sony home theatre systems, cash vouchers from IKEA, Slumberland and Art Village, and flowers from Amtrol.

The winning entries are on display at Highstreet, ground level of 1-Utama Shopping Centre (New Wing) until Aug 9, 2009.
