KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) subsidiary Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd (MKLSB) has signed a 10-year concession agreement with the government of Malaysia for the operation, management and maintenance of Menara Kuala Lumpur and its land comprising five lots of federal land held under the Federal Land Commissioner.

In a filing to Bursa Malaysia on Monday, Mar 14, TM said the concession agreement will put MKLSB in charge of managing the tower according to the approved standard for telecomunication and broadcasting towers, in addition to managing it as a tourism and hospitality centre.

This will entail keeping the tower and the land in good condition in accordance with acceptable prevailing building maintenance practices, it added.

This concession is a continuation from the previous concession agreement dated Sept 3, 1991. The tower was the first privatisation government using the build, operate and transfer concept in 1994.

Serving as Radio Television Malaysia's (RTM) television and FM-radio broadcasting station, it also enabled tracking services for the Marine, Meteorological and Traffic Control departments.

At a height of 421 metres, the tower is the fifth largest telecommunication and broadcasting tower in the world and is surrounded by the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve which spans 9.37 hectares in the middle of Kuala Lumpur.

The tower is also one of the country's official sites to observe the crescent moon to determine the start of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadhan. It is also one of Malaysia's falak observatory.

Construction began on Oct 4, 1991 and the tower was completed in May 1996. It was open to the public on July 23, 1996 and was officially launched on Oct 1, 1996 by then-Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

At the signing ceremony on Monday, the government was represented by Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture secretary general Datuk Seri Kamaruddin Siaraf while MKLSB was represented by its chief executive officer (CEO) Zuraidah Mohd Said.

The ceremony was witnessed by Minister of Information, Communications and Culture Datuk Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim. TM chairman Datuk Dr Halim Shafie, MKLSB chairman Tan Sri Datuk Md Radzi Mansor and TM group CEO Datuk Seri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa were also present.
